My 4.5 year old son has dry eczema. He's a very itchy little guy and has many allergies.?

He’s very itchy & he often gets short tempered from it. He’s allergic to dust mites, pollen, mold, rice, corn, soy, & egg. I bought a Hepa filter vacuum, encased his bedding to keep dust mites away, run air purifiers, change the furnace filter frequently, use fragrance free detergents, run clothes through a second rinse cycle, use no dryer sheets, keep baths tepid & brief, lotion with Eucerin immediately afterward, & have him wear only cotton clothes. I can honestly say NONE of this has made a difference. He starts Kindergarten in the Fall & I worry about him. How can he concentrate if he’s itchy? Keeping my child drugged on Benadryl indefinitely isn’t an option to me. I currently started him on probitotics with his allergists approval & give him 2 tsp. ground Flaxseed in his cereal every morning. I’m now trying Emu oil on him. I spend all my free time searching for answers. Has anyone found relief from dry eczema? Perhaps a Homeopathic Dr. is my next step. Thank you in advance for any help!

Allergies: the roof of my mouth itches?

Hi.
I’ve been ranting on here for a few weeks about my allergies.
Well, they’ve been extremely horrid this year. It is too early for my seasonal allergies; so I’m assuming that it’s dust mites.
Thus far, I have had my room thoroughly cleaned. I vacuumed with the HEPA filter. I bought an air purifier (also HEPA) and put in my air conditioner unit to keep the humidity down. I also put my bedding in the dryer for an hour before bed (we cannot have a washing machine, so I assume drying them kills some dust mites due to the heat).

While this has been helping to a point; I still wake up through the night with an itchy mouth and runny nose. I am on prescription Zyrtec (my doctor has switched my medication three times).

Any other advice for me?
Thanks.

Do you need help with your asthma questions? (Read this)?

I have suffered from asthma since I was 11. I am posting this as a way of helping so many of you who are suffering from asthma on here.

There’s a great book called Reversing Asthma by a doctor who suffers from asthma himself. (name is Richard n Firshein)

Also a great website I’ve bought products from in the past www.allergyasthmatech.com.

I’m not trying to push products by the way. I’ve just found that asthma catalog and the book above very helpful to me personally.

These are things that can help you if you have not tried them already.

-Get rid of mold in your home. Keep damp areas like basements and bathrooms as dry as possible. Get a dehumidifier if needed.
-Get rid of pets if you can, or keep them out of the bedroom.
-Get rid of strong cleaning chemicals (especially bleach) use vinegar instead
-Get rid of mouse, rat, and bug poisons. Use natural bug killers if you can.
-Keep house (naturally) clean to keep roaches away. Their poop triggers attacks.
-Get rid of air deodorizers/air fresheners. They have been proven in scientific studies to trigger asthma and allergy symptoms.
-Wash your sheets and blankets in hot water once a week to kill dust mites which trigger attack
-Cover your pillows and mattresses in dust mite zip covers (you can vinyl ones cheap at Wal-mart)
-Get an air purifier for getting rid of mold and dust. Get one with a good HEPA filter. Do NOT get an ozone machine. Those trigger asthma, not help it. Do NOT get an ionizer type air purifier. Those produce ozone as a by product which can aggravate asthma.
-Get rid of new carpeting and replace with hard wood floors if you can afford it.
-Vacuum once a week and wear a dust mask when you clean or vacuum.
- Get tested for food allergies. Stop eating dairy, nuts (especially peanuts) and processed foods for at least a month to see if you improve. Try to eat organic and more vegetables and fruits. Eat lots of garlic which is a natural anti-inflammatory. (you can get supplements.)
-Check your work environment. Are you being exposed to chemicals or allergens or mold there? Is your job making things worse? If so, it might be time to change jobs or get a doctor’s note for your boss.
- Get a second opinion if you feel your current doc is not helping you.
- Get a neti pot for sinus infections (they have worked wonders for me and you can get one cheap at Wal-greens) You poor salt or saline solution into warm water to irrigate your sinuses.
- Get tested for general allergies and get allergy shots if you can afford them. They can be very helpful for some asthmatics. (they’ve helped me)
- Some folks are sensitive to extremely dry air. If you must get a humidifier, get one that’s easy to clean and replace the filters often since they can grow mold themselves
- Get good high filtration filters like Filtrete for your heating and cooling system in your house. Those alone, can make a difference. Remember to replace them regularly.
- Stop smoking, if you smoke. (I know it’s hard but the reason I have asthma is because I was around my mom’s second hand smoke growing up) Don’t smoke around your kids if you can help it.
- Stop drinking. Alcohol is a nervous system depressant. A beer every once in awhile is probably fine but if you’re a heavy drinker, it could be affecting your lungs.
- Learn breathing exercises. Take yoga classes which are great for asthma. Listen to relaxation tapes when you get home from work.
- Wean yourself off of prednizone if you can little by little and gradually get onto an inhaled steroid instead. They have less side effects and get directly into the lungs better. (I’m personally on Asmanex which is a brand new one) Oral steroids have long term side effects. Get off of them if you can and switch to an inhaled steroid.
- Exercise. I know exercise can irritate asthma for some, but build up slowly. Start with walking. It’s one of the best ways to build up your breathing capacity over time.
- Get tested for acid reflux. Have heartburn, or tightness in your chest after you eat? Chronic acid reflux can result from overuse of oral steroids. They make the esophagus weak, and acid comes up more easily. This can eventually, irritate the lungs. Stay away from spicey foods or high acid foods like tomatoes. If you notice tightness in your chest after eating things like icecream or chocolate, those are acid reflux triggers. Stop certain foods for awhile and see if you improve. Stick to a bland diet for at least a month to see if there’s a difference.
- Use your peak flow meter. If you don’t have one, ask your doc for one. It measures your true breathing capacity if you’re not sure how "tight" you are getting.
- Use a scarf in the winter to keep the air going into your lungs warm and moist. Extreme temperature changes can trigger symptoms.
- Close your car windows and use the air in the summer on especially hot days. Ozone triggers asthma.
- Are you an artist? Is your favorite hobby making you sic

What brand/make/model of AIR PURIFIER should I buy and where besides AMAZON.COM?

I recently moved and I suffer from allergies. I was wondering what kind or Air Purifier I should buy. I have seen the ION BREEZE machines, but wonder if those work the same as a HEPA air filter, say from Target or WAL-MART, etc. I want something for my bedroom area only when I sleep at night and something quiet, not noisy. I plan on having a baby too soon, so would like something for them as well. I live in Arizona, so the air here sometimes gets really dirty and dry during the summers (106 heat, bus smog, dust mites, car exhaust, dust storms don’t go together! LOL). I just feel safer knowing my air is somewhat gettign cleaned and I am getting a good nights rest. I have seen these machines (various types) in my friends homes and they work really good. One them smokes in his house and his machine sucks the smoke right up out of the air. No residue on the furniture and smells. HELP PLEASE! LOL Just Kdding! I have looked an amazon for info. Just looking for suggestions! :)

I intend to buy an air purifier for my apt and would like some recommendations as to what kind to get.?

I don’t want a HEPA one as the filters are too expensive. I do want one that will do the entire apt (is effective through walls), does not produce ozone and costs less than 0. It should destroy mold, dust mites, dust and eliminate odors.

Ozone, negative ion, or uv-c air purifier?

Among those 3 types, which do you think is the best against dust mite allergy? Which kills the allergens produced by dust mites the best?

Thanks.

Ozone-producing Air Purifiers- Questions?

I’ve read that Ozone-producing air purifiers can sanitize a home, kill mold and bacteria, and nutralize odors, but I have also read that ozone itself can be a health hazard. I was wondering, which would be a greater risk to health? Having dust mites, mold, bacteria and other allergens in your home, or a buld up of Ozone?

My family has been having allergy issues, chronic sore throats and sinus infections and I am seriously considering an Ozone air purifier with UV light to keep upstairs in the bedrooms to help us all sleep better (we all get worse during the night and also we live in a 1 1/2 story so it’s just 2 bedrooms upstairs and no cold air return to circulate the air)

But I have also read that Ozone can be dangerous and can cause the same problems we are already currently facing! So what’s the deal?

This is all brought about because my in-laws just purchased an EdenPure Air purifier with UV and Ozone and my MIL says her house already smells and feels so different! I want to try it and while looking it up online, I found a lot of bad reviews based on excessive Ozone output… I don’t know much about this stuff, so can anyone help me? Thanks so much!
Also, would it be best to have one of these run upstairs during the day, then put downstairs at night? We really need help in cleaning the air of our home! No smokers, but we have a cat and a dog.

UV Lamps Furnace Filtration

There are several enjoyable summer activities for everyone. There's beach volleyball, swimming, and sunbathing, just to name a few. Although many are willing to sport that red lobster glow, sun damage can cause problems not only for the skin but also in the overall health of vacationers. Many of us have heard of Ultraviolet rays that come from the sun. Let's delve further to understand what it really means. Ultraviolet light or UV light is considered a form of radiation and typically has shorter wavelengths. There are wavelengths that we identify as violet. UV light belongs to frequencies higher than the ones we call violet, thus the name ultraviolet. This light is invisible to the human eye. There are three types: UV-A are long waves, UV-B are medium waves, and UV-C are short waves that have 254 nanometers. UV-C light is commonly present in heating, furnace, and air conditioning. It is also used to kill food industry commercial and household pests. Dust mites which reside in sheets and in the bed itself can be killed or disinfected through the use of air ventilation purification systems. These microorganisms are culprits for allergic reactions and other skin diseases on the human inhabitants. To reduce the population of dust mites, a UV lamp filtration system can be utilized. Other pathogen levels are also reduced to a significant clinical level. Even the dreaded H5N1 bird flu or Swine Flu is successfully eradicated.

HEPA Air Purifier OR ionizer for ASTHMA?

Hi guys,

My wife has Asthma. It is not as severe as others, she has 1 puff in the morning & one before bed (one is red, the other is blue). She thinks she is alergic to dust mites?

A big problem is that she snores at night & keeps me awake.

I have read a bit online regarding HEPA Air Purifiers and Ionizers that claim to drasticly aleviate this problem by removing dust etc from the air.

Which would be more suitable for an Asthma sufferer?
HEPA Air Purifier OR ionizer???
