Is it wrong to ask my roommate to keep her cat away from me?

my roommate got a cat without asking me. i have a severe cat allergy and allergy-triggered asthma- which the roommate knew about. i’ve gone through 3 inhalers in 2 weeks (had to pay full price for them because insurance wouldn’t cover a refill so soon), i’m coughing constantly, and i take 12 benadryl a day (at least.) my skin is freaking out and i have acne like a 12 year old. i’ve purchased a hepa air purifier and i have to keep it next to me at all times. i can’t sit on the couch because it’s covered in cat hair, and i have to change my clothes several times a day. i can’t touch my face for fear of setting off an itchy attack. i can’t eat at the kitchen table because the cat has made it her bed. oh, and i haven’t worn makeup since i got here because it all gets rubbed off right away anyway. and i HATE being without makeup. the cat is a "people person" and follows me wherever i go. sweet, yes. helpful, no.

the cat has its own room, where the litter box is, and we have a large finished basement. all i’ve asked is that the cat stay downstairs when i am upstairs, and vice versa, or just stay in one designated area so i can have a "safe zone". but my roommate looked at me like i’m a horrible, evil, animal hater when i asked. the only room the cat hasn’t been in is my bedroom, so i spend a lot of time there, and then i’m accused of being anti-social too. i like cats, but i also like being able to take in oxygen.

moving out is not an option. i have to stick it out for our 12 month lease. am i in the wrong for asking that the cat be kept in a designated area?

How do I make my room stop smelling like dust and remove the dust? Any safe, healthy solutions?

I have two dogs and two cats, so I think I know where the dust comes from, but I can’t make my room stop smelling dusty or being dusty no matter how many times I vaccum or clean. I have heard about air purifiers, but some say they produce ozone (eek!) and I was wondering if there is an easier, cheaper alternative. Are there any environmentally friendly and healthy cleaning sprays that actually work?

My cat has just been diagonsed with feline asthma…..:-(?

I have a 8 month old ASH. Since last week, his abdomen pumps up and down rapidly 3 to 4 times a day. Since it usually happens after he eats and he hasn’t been coughing, I thought he has digestion problem. Anyhow, I took him to the vet today and they took an x-ray…and the vet told me he has feline asthma. She showed me the x-ray and pointed out "donuts" and white calcified spot in his lungs. I cried so hard at the clinic.

The vet prescribed Prednisolone suspension 3 mg/ml twice a day (1 ml each time) for a week then decrease to once a day then decrease to once every other day. She also prescribed Cyproheptadine 1 mg/ml twice a day as well. She is also doing a fungal screen.

Can any one who has knowledge about feline asthma or has cats with feline asthma share some of your experience with me? Does the medications prescribed sound right? I checked online and it seems like 3 mg/ml twice a day for a 9 lbs cat is a little too much? Does he need to be on medications for the rest of his life? What else can I do to make to help him? I just bought two HEPA air purifiers and changed his litter from pine to yesterday’s news.

My cat has been on Hills Science Diet Nature’s Best Dry Kitten Food and Natural Balance Ultra Premium. I added Royal Canin Kitten 36 to his diet last month and it seems like it triggers the asthma but I am not sure.

I have been trying to switch him to can food (tried Wellness, Hills, Nutro) a few times but he just didn’t want it. Do you have any suggestions and tricks?

i have very bad asthma, but only when it comes to being around any cleaning products, pollen, dust…i also have 4 cats and im sure the cat hair starts it up too….i am looking for an ionic breeze or an air purifier, that’s cost effective and also does not eat up a lot of electric so that i can leave it on at all times…anyone have any suggestions or links for them?

Cat allergies and Air Filters?

So my girlfriend has two cats that are driving my allergies nuts. I’ve seen the ads for air purifiers that are suppost to help this kind of thing, but I’m kind of sceptical about shelling out 0 for an air filter without a fan.

So anyway, has anyone with pet allergies tried one of these new fangled HEPA/Ionized Air filters, do they work well on cat allergies? and is there a type or brand that you’d recommend?

Any other tips on treating cat allergies?
