According to the Consumer Reports Magazine and the results of the CADR tests done by AHAM, the ionic breeze is not effective, my experience as an indoor air quality professional agrees with their test results and opinions.
I work for BPA Air Quality Solutions and we test dozens of air cleaners each year. We use laser particle counters to take several reading related to the performance of air cleaners. One such test measures for total system efficiency where we measure the number of particles going into an air cleaner and measure the total number of particles coming out of an air cleaner. Another test we perform measures how long it takes for an air cleaner to clear a test chamber which is full of particles (2 million particle per square foot). The results of these tests (and others) help us determine which machines are the most efficient.
The efficiency of an air cleaner is only on aspect to determining which one is best for you. I have recently written an informative blog post on our website that will help guide you in the right direction for chosing the best air cleaner for your needs.
1. Airpura Standard (you can get one for $500, list price is $549)
This unit has one of the most powerful fans in it’s class, moving 560 CFM. It also contains 40 square feet of medical grade HEPA filter media (for removing particles)and 18 pounds of granulated, activated carbon (for removing odors and chemical fumes). I really like the variable speed control and the Swiss made motor is exceptionally quiet, compared to other units in this price range.
I like this unit so much, I own two. One in my bedroom and one in my office at work.
2. Blue Air 501 ($499.95 list price)
Scored the highest in this price range (second highest ever) on the CADR test. This unit is great for capturing particles, but does very little to remove odors or chemical fumes. Optional Smoke Stop filters do help with odors and chemical fumes though. Blueair also makes a smaller version, the 402 and a larger version, the 601.
3. Austin Air Healthmate ($449.99 list)
With 60 square feet of medical grade HEPA media, 15 pounds of a carbon/zeolite mixture and about 400 cfm, this is a solid unit. Has a 3 speed fan selector switch and is housed in a powder-coated steel body.
4. The Air-O-Swiss 2061 ($345 list)
Good all around performance for it’s price range, there may be better models at the $500 price, but I wanted to show a variety of price ranges and the best in each range.
5. Hamilton Beach TrueAir Ultra 350 ($199 list)
This unit is hard to find as it was discontinued last year. If you find one, it’s worth the money. For particle removal it actually performed as well, or better than many of the $400-$500 units. I’m not sure why they stopped making them, I saw one in Target last week marked down to $149 and was tempted to buy it. I know they still have plenty of replacement filters at HB. It’s not very quiet, but when it comes to removing particles, nothing even close to the price can compare.
