What is a good room air purifier for someone with allergies and asthma ?

Surprisingly, most experts would NOT recommend air purifiers as 1st-line treatments for allergies or asthma. There is no medical evidence supporting their routine use in these situations.
Instead, work on eliminating the allergens (what causes your allergies) from your home. Common allergens include dust mites, pet dander (especially cats, birds), pollen, and more. Start by removing heavy rugs & drapes from your bedroom. Wash your bed linens regularly. Keep your home as dust-free as possible.
If your symptoms continue and still want an air purifier, get one with a HEPA filter. Avoid those that use electrostatics (such as the IonicBreeze) or ozone. Ozone is a known trigger of asthma and airway irritant. Incidentally, ozone is one component of smog. Consumer Reports recommends the Whirlpool Whispure AP45030S or the Kenmore Progressive 83202 as the best room air filters. Neither one generates ozone.
ionic breeze is good
The ionic breeze is garbage. there are several models with a washable or vacuumable HEPA filter. The hepa filter is the gold standard for cleaning air. Companies that use clean rooms use them, as do hospitals. You may want to check Ebay. I like the idea of finding one that also employs UV-C light to kill off spores in the air. I saw a Target they have one made by Filtrete that looks good, but you have to buy replacement filters for about 20. bucks.
I have the ionic breeze. It does create an ozone smell, but I don’t find it offensive or enough to really think about. Also, I don’t believe it is "filtering" the air, rather it is just grabbing up the particles it happens to come into contact with. It is noiseless when it is clean and makes a little vibrating or humming sound when it is dirty. It is pretty easy to clean.
I would NEVER recommend that someone buy this product for the ridiculous price advertised on TV. I bought it from a co-worker who has a huge room with cathedral ceilings. He was sucked in by the infomercial, but didn’t get the results he expected. I bought it from him for $50.00 and was happy with the results in my small bedroom. I did feel that it made a difference.
