As i point out in my review, the ionic air purifier only has a capability of removing particles bigger than 1 micron.
Bacteria/germs are sized at between 0.5 microns and 2 microns. So only bacteria that are bigger than 1 micron will be caught by the Ionic air purifier.
Viruses on the other hand are far smaller ranging in size from about .01 to .25 microns so you ionic purifier will not be able to touch these.
The other problem with an Ionic purifier is that its based on a technology that is unable to purifier large amounts of air. The Ionic pro air purifier uses the same technology as the ionic breeze air purifier and in tests this was shown to remove only 30% of particles from the air. So its very likely that your ionic purifier will miss most of the germs and bacteria in the air.
There are a lot of different types of air cleaners on the market, so to get some basic information about how each type works go to http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/green-air-filters.html There you will see that the ionizers only change the charge of the particles. A typical cycle for an ionizer goes like this:
1. Ionizer puts out a charge or corona, to change the charge of the particles that are passing through or near the ionizer.
2. The particles then are attracted to other particles of opposite charge making them heavy enough to fall to the ground. Supposedly, cleaning the air.
3. When the particle hits the ground it discharges and separates from the other particles.
4. Any movement in the room sends the particle airborne again and the cycle starts over.
Big waste of time and money, not to mention the ozone (dangerous lung irritant) that is usually produced by ionizers. Typically, germs are carried on particles, so if you can get the particles to stay on the floor, then the ionizers are removing the germs from the air. This is how the manufacturers justify their claims.
Now, lets get back to real world scenarios. Particles, mold, bacteria, germs, viruses in your indoor air need to be removed, that means gone from your air. You need a high efficiency air cleaner like the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/portable-air-purifiers.html This unit has a hospital grade HEPA filter to remove 99.97% of all particles down to 0.3 microns. It also has carbon to help with removing gases and odors, plus the ultra-violet light kills mold and viruses. Also, with its photocatalyst it neutralizes gases like carbon monoxide. This is the same unit used in hospital labs for its efficiency and effectiveness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDDX_XWAcRY If you are looking for the best money spent on an air purifier, the Sun Pure SP-20C is hard to beat. I hope this helps.
Many people have had very pleasant experiences with Ionic breeze quadra silent air purifier, and have been saying this air purifier does wonderful job in removing germs from the air into the ground, so the thing that is left for you to do is just to vacuum your floor afterwards.
I have just written a review on the Ionic Pro Air Purifier which i think is the one you are talking about: http://air-purifier-reviewsite.com/reviews/ionic-pro-air-purifier/
