Does anyone have experiences with Air Purifiers for the home? I am looking for people who have them.?
I am especially interested in people who have tried ones like Ionic breeze from Sharper Image, Oreck, Ionic Pro, etc. Also I am interested in people who have used HEPA type filters, I have allergies which seem to be getting worse as I get older and would like to have clean air in my home.
Thanks

Well in my own experience I would avoide anything from Oreck. I bought two of them and they barely made a dent in the house. Don’t believe everything you see in an infomerical.
Also from reading consumer reports and seeing various articles on them, I would also avoide the Ionic Pro.
From what I have read it may cost more, but you are still better off going with a high quality HEPA machine. Sure they cost more, buy you get the the results you deserve.
Check out consumerreports.org for more detail. they had a pretty through break down off machines they tested.
I am allergic to everything from cats and dogs to pine trees and grass. I tryed many machines. I recently purchased 2 Honeywell brand air cleaners from the sams store. I put one in my livingroom and one next to my bed, and oh my goodness, what a difference. They are about 200. but well worth it. I will never use anything else. Good luck.
I have a Living Air Purifier which is Ionic. Mine was about $600.00 and I’ve had it for about 7 years and it is great insofar as making the air smell good and getting rid of smoke, cooking smells and other nasty odors. I don’t think the price has gone up that much. I highly recommend it. I’ve tried lots of purifiers. I, myself, have asthma and allergies. I’m on medication for asthma but for the allergies, which I have all year long, I use Tylenol "Severe" allergy medication. You have to sign for it and I’ve only found it at Wal-Mart. They’re are a lot of them but this one is light green in color and has a cooling taste when you take them. It’s the best I’ve found, including prescriptions. Good luck.
Warren – My sense is that Ionic Breezes and most of that family are a scam. I bought a Kenmore Nano Silver Hepa air cleaner from Sears (about $150) and it is terrific, not to mention, it has a remote control that is beneficial.
Good luck
I had a hepa type for years. They are only rated for smallish areas, a few hundred square feet, so I keep mine in the bedroom. It has allowed me to sleep at night with the window open and have no problems. It was if that was an allergy free zone. It finally blew up ( after years of service) and I purchased an ionic type at Best Buy for $100. It works, but I have had one instance where it was not as effective as I could have wished. I was slightly uncomfortable, but still able to sleep with no drugs. Maybe a better one, ( I bought for price, not effectiveness) might have been a better choice. As of now, I am quite happy with the filter, it was inexpensive, it takes up less room, its cheaper to operate( no filter changes) and it’s pretty effective.
I am using a HEPA based air treatment called Atmosphere. It is awesome. It has made my life better and I have seen people with Asthma breath easy because of this machine.
It is worth every penny for sure and they have 120 day money
back guarantee.
Let me know if you need more details.
I use a cool mist humidifier in my bedroom at night. Right now I turn it on as soon as I get home because allergies are bad in Dallas. It has no filters and requires only a little water each evening. Vornado has some with filters but I discovered that the filterless is just as effective and requires no replacement filters. I sleep and wake up without the allergy symptoms. It truely makes a difference and allows my body to cleanly cycle through the night until I go to work and expose myself to more pollen. I can’t remember the brand name of the one at home. I purchased it at Bed Bath and Beyond for $250.00 several years ago and do not regret it.
This is a awesome product available for air purification. Just go thro’ the contents. Though its expensive, worth the money. I know lots of my friends are using it. I am planning to have one soon (I had my polips removed from my nose couple of weeks ago, need to be Xtra careful about the allergies). If you need more info pl. email at bshanu75@yahoo.com I can send you the demo dvds.

Most room air cleaners actually DO NOT work. Check the consumer advocate magazines and you’ll discover your TV collects more dust than many of the $400 air cleaners listed in the question!
If you have central heating & air conditioning, your best bet is to find the most effective filter that can fit into that system. That way you can clean all the air in your home. I’ve got Trane Clean Effects and have seen huge improvements in my family’s reliance on Claritin and our family doctor.
Be careful with an ionizer. They are to be used only when people are not in the area. They are ok to use for a few hours (on a timer) while you are at work but do not use them while you are there, and not when sleeping.
Look for the EPAs report on lung damage from ionizer air cleaners.
They are especially bad for people with Asthma.
I also have big problems with allergies . 4 yrs. ago l bought a Nikken Air Wellness Power5 ,price $600.00. I know have three of them. One in every bedroom, as I was lugging it around at night, I also have 2 dogs . My husband did a cost analysis on the price of the replacement filters comparing it with a sears air filter system and found the Nikken Air Wellness Power 5 to be the cheapest . It tells you when the filter is full so you are changing it needlessly .It shuts of should it get bump ,and it is quiet ,It also turns it self up or down if needed and does not but out any ozone. Air consist of negative and positive ions . Example things that take electricity release positive ions and we know we all deal with that .
We have just gotten a Honeywell Hepa filter and it works fantastically. My boyfriend has an excessive amount of allergies and this has cut them down quite a bit. I would suggest against an Ionic air purifier because I have heard that the ozone that it creates aggravates allergies and air passages. I hear some of the ionic breezes have ozone guards, but it doesn’t filter out all the ozone.
I have 2 Sharper Image Ionic Breezes, one for bedroom and one for living room. They’ve helped me a ton with my allergies. My ex had a cat and I was highly allergic, and with this thing on I could hang out there without major symptoms. It’s important to keep them clean regularly according to instructions, and be careful using candles around them too much, but as long as you take care of them, they improve the air quality tremendously.
Ionic Breeze has been a real winner for many people. Dependable, and does the job..
