My air purifier isn’t going to arrive until Monday. But I’ve read enough user opinions that I believe they do work and work well. Two of the very important things to consider are the size of the unit and the cost of the replacement filters.
You obviously want the larger units that can move all the air in the room and filter it multiple times within one hour.
Some of the filters are incredibly expensive. So before you buy any model check with the manufacture web sites and do cost comparisons. They should have at least two filters in them. Charcoal and hepa filters.
Well surprisenly I have heard they really don’t do that much and are basically a gimmick to get your money and there are no reasonably better brands out there to speak of as I say it is just a gimmick, don’t waste your money you are better off just dusting a little more and not spreading the dust around your home as much and you can do this by putting a small amount of Liquid Fabric softner on your dusting cloth or just moisten your cloth with water and a little fabric softner or a little water and spray polish on your cloth this will help to keep the dust on your cloth instead of scattering it around your home and you breathing it all, I have found by doing this I have cut down on the allergies we have in my home. Good Luck !
Air purifiers that use HEPA filters work very well. Look on each box to find the square footage closest to the space you want to use it in. Buy at least one replacement filter — outer and HEPA — when you purchase your filter. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait to order new filters directly from the company. Some companies offer great filters that are more expensive. I personally use "The Defender" by Filterqueen, based out of Ohio. http://www.filterqueen.com/ They offer products on the web that I use and love. My favorite is their vacuum. It does not let dust escape into the air, it cleans more deeply than ordinary vacuums, and it has a hepa filter plus a prefilter and an extra prefilter made with carbon that is optional for removing dust to make a place "hospital" clean or just to help remove odors from the air. You can even use one of their scented oils in it to add fresh scents into the air as you vacuum.
The EPA indoor air quality site recommends NOT using "ionizing" (Ozone generators) air filters. When these filters are run, they change O2 in the air to O3. O3 is ozone, a type of air found up in our atmosphere, and it is not healthy to breathe. The ionizing filters are basically producing air pollution that you find in cities on hot summer days. Lots of major cities give you the ozone levels expected that day and warn people with respiratory problems to stay indoors as much as possible. Most people who buy air filters have respiratory problems, so how the ionizer companies think their product does any good for people with respiratory problems, I don’t understand. It has been proven that for an ionizer to do its job "right" (killing bacteria/germs/mold in the air), it would have to use TOXIC levels of ozone. Which means, you shouldn’t use an ionizer around people. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html
And, one other thing. If you are using your filters for air purity due to allergy problems, never open your windows to "air out" your house. It only allows all that pollen, mold and dust from the outdoors in. It makes your filter have to work that much harder and it makes it so you have to change your prefilter and HEPA filter more frequently.
I use the Ionmax Ion-388 air purifier on in my bedroom. We originally got it because my husband has allergies, and found that his allergies cleared up and he slept so much better with the air purifier. I’ve found the air feels cleaner, and I generally sleep better too. We live in an apartment building with a smoker downstairs, so the Ion-388 has really helped to get rid of the secondary smoke that was coming up through the floor.
The Ionmax air purifier doesn’t have a filter. Dust gets attracted to the metal blades, and you just wipe them down when needed. It has a UV lamp, which helps to kill bugs, but there is also a model without this if you don’t need it. You can get it from here http://www.topbuys.com.au/ionmax-silent-ionic-air-purifier-with-uv-lamp-ion-388.aspx

Buy a Rainbow. They are the only ones that will work constantly, without cleaning or changing filters. Just add water.
The Ionic breeze helps you fall asleep easier and helps me not snore
