I have air purifiers in every room in my house, due to asthma. Before I put them in, I cleaned out my ionic whole house filter monthly. After I put in the room purifiers, I checked the ionic filter, and it was never dirty! I cleaned it out maybe once every 6 months. This tells me the room filters definitely remove dust, etc. from the room. I have several different brands. They all work fine. I would recommend getting one with a filter that is universal and easy/cheap to replace. You do need to replace the filters regularly.
