How is static electricity used in air purifiers and to control pollution in industrial smokestacks?
i was just wondering, since my friend asked me this and we both don’t know

Pollutant particles are given an electrical charge and so collect on positively charged plates which can later by cleaned.
That’s correct. Air pollutants are electrically charged and this enables them to either get attached to a plate or to a filter. That is how pollutants are removed from the air.
Conventional electrostatic air cleaners use plates to collect charged particles, and these plates need to be cleaned regularly to function efficiently.
However, there are some advanced air purifiers on the market which combine both electrostatic and filter technologies to produce the highest efficiency possible.
For example, Blueair air purifiers combine these two technologies in this way:
1. During the first stage they charge the particles electrically, and
2. During the second stage, a HEPA-style filter collects the charged particles.
So, for these air purifiers no plate-cleaning is reguired but only a replacement of HEPA filters.
Hope thise helps.
You can go to http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/air-conditioning-air-filter.html to see how this can work in your home to control pollution and dust. This is an excellent page to see just how simple these air cleaners are and how effective. I hope this helps.
