Ozone air purifier, safe for birds?
I recently purchased an Oreck Air Cleaner but didn’t realize it also emits ozone. So before I use it I want to make sure it’s safe for use around my many small feathered friends.

Do not use Air Fresheners of any kind in the vicinity of birds, they contain chemicals which can cause severe respiratory problems in small birds.
If the birds are confined to the room the Oreck is in, then keep the humidity up, and the lights on when it is being used. The removal of contaminants is almost as important to them as not being exposed to excess levels of ozone. The humidity and visible light will help lower ozone levels.
Might help if you only used it in a large room, with lots of soft surfaces too.
Use your money-back guarantee and send the ORECK back. Ozone kills living tissue and can be harmful to the sensitive respiratory system of birds. The best air purifier for birds (and humans) on the market is the Sun Pure SP-20 as recommended by Parrot Island at http://parrotisland.mainsecureserver.com/catalog/index.php You will find a better price at http://www.smoke-eaters-supply.com/air-purifiers-for-smoke.html Ozone air cleaners are incredibly cheap to manufacture, plus the size of the ORECK does not allow for real air cleaning even if it was able. Ozone is dangerous especially when used therapeutically, as in the application of air cleaning. I hope this helps.
Birds live and thrive outdoors where there is low levels of ozone. Birds also do well indoors with low levels of ozone. I wouldn’t use an air purifier that produces high levels of ozone around birds or locate any ozone air purifier very close to them (especially a caged or tethered bird) because the ozone level might be a little higher close to the air purifier. These air purifiers produce low levels http://www.air-purifier.org. The amount of ozone produced by the Oreck seems to be so low that it almost doesn’t exist and can’t reduce odors etc. much, at least that was my experience with the one I tried. It’s basically a small filter and electrostatic precipitator.
