What is the best air purifier for a child with major allergies?
I don’t have a lot of extra cash, but would like to find a good air purifier for my son who has terrible allergy problems.

Contact the American Lung Association and see if they have suggestions or maybe even a way for you to get one greatly discounted.
Have you tried the obvious around your home?
Get rid of carpet, put allergy free mattress covers on, no pets, change pillows every 6 months, no cigarette smoking anywhere around child, that includes car and home.
I have pretty bad asthma, mine got amazingly better just with the mattress cover!

The best one I have ever used is one that ionizes the air. There are several different brands and models in varying price ranges. Do a search for air ionizer on Google. You can do a lot of good by using one of the hypoallergenic filters for your air conditioner. Also try using a vacuum with a filter.
Do not buy an ionizing filter, they are potentially harmful. Askme nicely had some excellent advice. Do get a mattress cover and new pillow. As to an air filter get one that has a HEPA filter. Keep it in his room
Our 4 kids were asthmatic and had allergies. The best one that I’ve ever purchased and the one that has been consistantly rated #1 for rooms by Consumer Reports is made by Friedrich. I see that it’s $550 including shipping. They are extremely well built.
If you are a homeowner, Carrier makes an excellent whole house air purifier…. As I recall, the purifier was quoted @ $679 two years ago. I hope that one of these will make your son comfortable.
Incidentally, ionizers are not recommended by medical authorities…. I mention this because someone recommented one here.
I wouldn’t even bother with that air purifier. I have asthma myself, and also 3 of my kids have it. Id just like to add something to what askmenicely said. For the pillows and comforter I used to hang them out in the winter and then put them in a garbage bag, stick the vacuum cleaner tube in the opening and suck the back empty. By doing this while pillow and comforter is cold, the mites in them will easier let go and be vacuumed out. Also it is very important that you don’t have any humidity in walls that can create mold, since mold spurs will come out and this is really bad for someone with allergies. Also the mattress is important, if you have one of these foam/sponge matresses and it has been wet a few times, you should change it. It might also contain mold spurs then, or if it is very old. If you want to buy something that will help your son, I’d rather spent those money on a good vacuum cleaner. Hope your son will feel a bit better soon
