Basically Ionic types are electrostatic; they don’t use filters. They pull particulate matter from air by charging it statically and then collecting the charged particles on a grid with the opposite charge.
Hepa refers to filters with a very small micron capacity that will remove tiny particles from the air. Hepa filters are often chosen as allergy control aids.
Smoke is removed at least partly by both. Clubs and restrauants with smoke problems choose the electrostatic, I thin they are generally better for that application.
The difference is that a Hepa filter actually sits at an air intake and literally filters out the particles from the air. An Ionic one is one that charges the particles in the air so they stick together, then become too heavy to stay aloft. Then they fall to the ground and are eliminated with regular cleaning.
If you’re going to spend the money on a filtration system, you should get an Air Source. It’s an Ionic type device that doesn’t require the air to actually flow through it. Most of the ionic devices require the air to pass through them to filter it, this one just emits the ions (safely of course) and covers 3000 sq feet.
I think you should put a Hepa filter on any central air intake, but in order to make the smoke smell go away, you should use the Air Source.
We have one in our apartment, and it is amazing! It even got rid of "New Apartment Smell" of paint and new carpet and whatever else they covered up before we moved in.
If you do get one, be prepaired to clean your house later that day, because it will look like you haven’t dusted in a month that first day.

Ionic does not use filters to clean the air
Ionic Pro owner, I love it
