how safe, and useful are air purifiers.

Absolutely avoid any of them that produce Ozone. Make sure you read the specs to find this out…and some of them make claims that ozone is not harmful, but it is. For further Information click on the below link.

They are great! Try to find a hepa or ionic purifier. Ionic purifiers do not need replacement filters, they work by emitting negative ions into the air which attract ions with a positive charge (the stuff you want to remove) and collect on the collection grid in the unit.
You can also purchase a rock salt lamp, these naturally do the same thing and are cool looking.
They are safe and useful. Look for one that uses a hepa filter. If you go to a hardware type store the salesperson for that department can tell you everything you need to know about them. You will most likely need one for every couple of rooms in your house or apartment especially the bedroom.
