High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters (1) are rated to remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 micron. However, "there is no single standard or certifying organization." A cheap HEPA will not do as well as a more expensive one. Also smaller filters may last only a short time before needing to be replaced others may last the life of the product. You do get what you pay for.
Other air filter features that may be advertised would include
UV sterilization (can be useful for pathogens)
electrostatic air purification (truly washable filtration that uses electric charges to trap particles)
charcoal filters (eliminates gasses)
ozone generation (can clean the environment)
ozone elimination (but is not healthy as in higher amounts it irritates the lungs)
All of these things can be valued features or simply gimmicks that are so small that they that they don’t contribute to air quality for very long if at all. All filters of any quality should be sized so that the fan that moves the air will not function outside of the capacity of the filters to do their job. Therefore pay close attention to the recommended size of the area a particular filter can cover. A desk top filter for cigarettes is not going to do much for your living room.
Also pay close attention to what you are trying to filter from the air.
