Neighbour smokes like a chimney?
Ok so here’ my problem. My neighbour is insane, I really think she belongs in an institution of some sort. I can probably write a book about her but that’s not the point of this post. She smokes like crazy, probably 3 packs a day… I don’t know I’m just guessing but the problem is that I smell it all the time. Sometimes I can see her smoking out her window which you’d think would be a good thing, but I can visually see the cloud of smoke rolling it’s way into my window. So much for getting fresh air in the apartment.
I should also mention that I live in France and the building was probably built 500 years ago, so ventilation is not very good. Insulation is not very good.
I would try talking to her but that’s not really an option since she’s incoherent most of the time. Yes I was serious when I said she should be in an institution. People often think I’m just exaggerating and blowing things out of proportion yet as soon as they come over they agree with me that she’s nuts.
So I’ve been thinking about getting one of those air purifier/filters (with a hepa filter). Although I’m wondering if it would require good insultation to actually do anything, or if it will help at all. The apartment is not very well insulated, and there’s no A/C so I generally want the windows open (French people are scared of air conditioning… sucks for me). Any other suggestions on how to deal with this situation would be great. I am considering moving but until that happens… Thanks.
In response to the "if it’s only the smoke answer", it’s not… like I said I could write a book. But moving is definitely something I’m thinking about.

I’d get a big fan and blow it straight back at her.
If it’s that much of a problem then move. If you’re not happy in the apartment that you live in then go find one you will be happy in. That smoke can be very bad for your health.
An air purifier is ok, and it really doesn’t matter what type of insulation you have. You should consider a fan out the window first, as an air purifier is more expensive and the filters aren’t cheap.
I would put a large fan in your window, facing so that the air is being blown out. It might help redirect some of the smoke. I have an issue with a neighbor who smokes in his garage which is connected to ours and our house smells like smoke a lot. You can try incense or candles to cover the smell, but there’s really not much you can do other than that. I’m not sure if a Hepa filter would be worth the investment in your case since there’s no insulation to keep the smoke from coming through the walls.
I like the fan idea. The air purifier is a good idea but they are expense and the filters are outrageous. Some have cleanable filters but you have to be very careful with them.
Also try a little white vinegar in a bowl to get rid of smoke smell, since I hate the smell of vinegar I usually do this on a day when I’m not going to be home. By the time I get home smoke and vinegar smells are both gone.
start a petition to have her not smoke in her own house non smokers will love you forever. even set up a shrine dedicated to you and you only for "getting rid of the right to smoke PERIOD Then go after the people who believe that abortion is something that they have a right over their bodies then go after the people who dip. honestly, save yourself the aggravation and move. remember, in life, pick and choose your battles…this one has an easy solution; by moving, you will save your sanity and won’t have to deal with all the "other stuff" you mentioned about her. Good luck.
