What will help clear the air in my Mom's house?
My Mom is a HEAVY smoker, has been for years. When I step into her house, literally, my eyes hurt, and I can barely breathe. I ask her why she doesn’t open the windows, but she reminds me that it is winter, and she can’t afford to have the windows open. I feel bad that she is constantly breathing in not only the direct cigarette smoke, but the second-hand smoke that fills her house daily as well.
I was thinking about getting her some kind of air purifier, but I’m not sure which kind. The terms they use confuse me…ionic, negative ions, etc. So maybe somebody has used one, or knows something about those types of products. If you do, please help me. I just hope it’s not too expensive, whatever you all recommend, as I am on a budget. I think this will make a good Christmas gift. Haha, thank you

Smoke odor is difficult to get rid of. Not only is the odor permeated throughout everything, there is actually tar or nicotine or whatever all over everything. I had trouble cleaning my dad’s house when I realized he had encroaching alzheimer’s and the smoke stuff was all over. I don’t know what to tell you to clean the furniture with but I now used Odoban to get rid of odors. I put it in my carpet shampooer and not only carpets but the mattress when I have all the bedding off. It sanitizes and removes odor. You need to start scrubbing everything. One thing about smoking is you don’t realize how bad you smell, how bad your house smells. . .and clothing. . .auto. . .hair. . .breath. . .losing your sense of smell seems to go along with smoking. So that will help with the odor but you still have to scrub stuff clean. . .Good luck. It’s a job.
clean carpes drapes febreese (if thats how u spell it) candles new bedding couches ect.
Febreze works wonders for a home, the spray, the candles, and my favorites now are the luminaries.
Simple and amazing. Put saucers or bowls of vinegar around the house. It makes the smoke smell go away. It also works after cooking fish.
You can try these simple steps to remove cigarette smell.
First and most important, open as many windows as possible to let in the fresh air. If possible, leave windows open all day or for some time on daily basis. To neutralize cigarette odors in the home, pour undiluted vinegar into a pot and warm over very low heat on the stove. Let the vinegar simmer for a couple of hours. Place bowls of vinegar in various rooms around the home to eliminate the aroma. For freshening of the air and to eliminate odors, fill a pot with water and add slices of lemon, lime, orange and other citrus fruits.
These are easy steps and not so expensive and can be a good Christmas gift for your mom.
Well. Smoking odor itself is extremely hard to get rid of. The first thing I would do is get some sort of air purifier. I recommend the Ionic Air Purifier. It’s one of the best air purifiers there is and should really help cut down on the smell and bad air in her house. Depending on how well that works, you may need to replace fabrics/carpets/furniture. But, I’d start with the air purifier. Here’s some information on the Ionic Air Purifier.

Typically, we recommend that you remove the source of the irritation, but in your case, I don’t think she will give this up any time soon. We would recommend the Sun Pure SP-20C room air purifier at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/air_purifiers_for_asthma.html. This will definitely take care of the air pollution and is capable of cleaning the air in a room up to 2,000 sq ft. This unit is not "cheap" but it will do the job. You can spend far less, but you may not get the results you need. This unit produces no ozone and is capable of neutralizing the odors of smoking and the toxic gases produced from smoking. I hope this helps.
Cleaning away smoke odor is a major job, as everything in the home has to be washed. Once it’s done, though, perhaps your Mom will enjoy her fresh home so much she’ll take the tobacco outside.
You can encourage her by setting up an attractive smoking spot on the patio or in the garage. If she needs convincing, let her know how unpleasant her home is to guests. Unfortunately, even if you spend a fortune on the best ionic air cleaner it will not completely eliminate tobacco odor and frankly, they’re not worth the cost or the electricity to run them constantly.
