For moms who've had babies in the summer (heat question)?
I am due on August the 12th and I live in LA. It gets REALLY hot around this time of year starting in July and ending maybe in early October. I am concerned because my bedroom and my babies bedroom is upstairs. We have an old house and priced an air condition system but it was just TOO expensive, the way our home is built we would have to have 2 seperate systems and pay double (one upstairs and one downstairs). My question is what other alternatives do I have? Right now, we are looking into getting a window air conditioner for my room (the baby will be in a bassinett) and one for his room as well. I’ve purchases an HEPA air purifier for the baby’s room and my room so far, but what advice can one give me keeping my baby cool at night while he will be sleeping (heat rises in our room). We can open all our windows, etc. But I don’t want my baby to get over heated during these summer months.

Before I had an air conditoner I used a window fan the small ones that have two sides 1 to suck hot air out the other to pull in cooler air and put my kids in a onsie or just a pamper over the summer however since you live in LA not sure if that is an option but you could buy a portable air conditioner 1 or 2 because then you could leave one down stairs and move the one upstairs between rooms it will save you money and is a better option then buying 2 for each floor/room.I hope this helps
I used to have this problem in my home as well. I got a window air conditioner. If you don’t have the air conditioner by then just dress the baby in a diaper and use a fan. Don’t let the fan blow directly on the little one though. Just let it circulate the air and keep the little baby cool.
I lived in a 3rd story walk-up when my daughter was a baby in AZ. It was HOT!! I got a window air conditioner for her room. I could not afford more than one so i mostly slept on the floor of her room on an air mattress. My room had one window that went out on the the covered porch. Good luck!
i think the window unit will do just fine!
You should like a very good mother! You have thought of everything sounds like.
i live in california (northern) as well but we still get 110 degree weather. i kept the air conditioner on during the night or turned on the fan. i also let him sleep in just a onesie and kept a light blanket on him at night
Get a window air conditioner and let the baby sleep in your room through the summer – it’s more convenient anyways – with feedings and diaper changes.
Well I think you should really consider having AC for the whole house, did you know one of the causes of SIDS is a baby over heating? Deff. have a window air conditioner in the babies room if anything, and the air purifier, that should cool the room down a good amount. Good luck with everything!!
Get ceiling fans and push all the hot air down… then get your ac unit for the windows.
a window unit would be a good idea, otherwise the trick my family used before we could afford air was to leave windows in the house open at night when it was cooler, then as early in the morning as possible, close all of the windows and close the blinds and curtains so the sun doesn’t shine in and heat things up. you can also get a fan that you can point upward at the bottom of the stairs to blow cooler air from downstairs up.
be sure you stay cool and hydrated this summer! my first was born August 30, my son is due July 27th. heat isn’t fun when you are very pregnant!
i live in louisiana and our summers start… well it already started and will continue to be sweltering thru september with 80%+ humidity daily. i feel your pain. a window unit will be sufficient to keep the baby cool. good luck!
i just put a window air conditioner in my room (baby will also be in bassinet) – we have central air, but the air doesn’t make it upstairs when its 100 degrees with the humidity. When I eventually put the baby in his nursery I am going to crank the window air conditioner in my room higher and then use a fan to blow some of the cool air out of my room and into his. I will also likely just let him sleep in a onsie or diaper depending on the heat!
